There are a number of different ways to clean BOD bottles. The following protocol will generally result in clean BOD bottles.

  1. Empty the sample solution from the BOD bottle after use.
  2. Brush using a dilute soapy solution and a BOD bottle brush, scrub the BOD bottle clean.
  3. Rinse with tap water until the water is no longer soapy.
  4. Add approximately 5 mL of 50:50 Sulfuric acid to the bottle.
  5. Rinse thoroughly 3 times with tap water.
  6. Rinse a final 3 times with DI water.
